The Root of Cellular Communication

The science behind HealthPhix is rooted in the study of a molecule found on every cell in our body called the Connexin Molecule*. In simple terms, connexin is the channel that enables communication between cells.

The connexin molecule is made up of six individual connexin proteins, like petals of a flower, and at its center is a pore that opens and closes based on environmental and nutritional conditions (such as alkalinity).  Connexins on different cells join or dock together at the pore to form a connexin channel (also called Gap Junction). When the pores are open, nutritional molecules essential for cellular function such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, amino acids and more can pass from one cell to the other.

In addition, when connexin pores are open, cells communicate electrically with one another, which enables coordination of similar cell types. All this is to say that connexins are integral to the regulation of all cells and making sure they function properly is critical to cellular health and thus our overall health and well-being.

Why we PHIX your health – the pH Connection

One of the most important processes in the body is the process by which pH is maintained.  pH is the reflection of our body’s acid-alkaline balance and is associated with cellular health. The pH scale ranges from 0 on the acidic scale to 14 on the alkaline end. A solution is neutral if its pH is 7.0. Our body functions best when we are slightly alkaline between 7.0-7.5. The two main reasons are:

    Connexins function properly when our body is alkaline enabling cell-to-cell communication (helps keep connexin pores open vs closed). The pH regulation of connexins applies to all cell types, eg. bone cells, eye cells, brain cells, heart cells, skin cells.  In addition, pH also regulates the number of connexins on our cells.  A consistent acidic environment reduces the production of connexin molecules leading to a reduction in overall cellular function.

    The pH of blood is slightly alkaline at 7.4 and it stays that way unless something is very wrong. Blood pH reflects what is happening in the whole body and is largely regulated by your kidneys, lungs, intestines, and liver. Blood pH varies very little. When the body is consistently producing large amounts of acid, it forces the blood to buffer itself to maintain a pH of 7.4 by removing calcium from the bone to neutralize the acid. Over time, this depletes your bones of calcium and causes diseases such as osteoporosis and conditions including kidney stones (which are just collections of calcium).  Chronic Acidosis can also affect your metabolism, weight and athletic performance.

The Relationship between Cellular, Blood and Urine pH

Measuring the pH our cells would be difficult, expensive and generally not practical.  However, there is an easy way to understand how our daily food in-take impacts our cellular health¾measuring our urine pH.  This is why each box of HealthPhix Anti-Aging Mineral Blend comes with a packet of urine pH test strips.

Urine pH reflects the net renal acid load generated in our body primarily from consuming acid-generating food (e.g. meat, chicken, fish, hard cheeses). Urine pH indicates how acidifying or alkalizing our diet is so we can adjust our daily in-take and restore pH balance with essential minerals¾ calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc¾and a more alkalizing diet (balancing acidic proteins with healthy servings of vegetables/fruit and managing portions).

If your urine pH is consistently acidic (less than 7.0 on the test strips) over long periods of time, it means the body is chronically producing large amounts of acid, most likely from acid-generating foods. In this case, the blood and cells eventually become slightly acidic (called low-grade metabolic acidosis) causing connexin closures and reduced cellular function and communication. This can lead to a variety of health issues and illnesses. However, if your urine pH is consistently alkaline over time, this is an indication that your diet is overall net-alkalinizing and your body is not likely to be acidic.

It is important to understand that a quick change in urine pH does not result in a quick change in blood pH. The pH of blood, urine and organs differ in response to our diet and differ in how often they change. Blood pH barely changes because it is highly regulated (buffered), so much so that a 0.1 pH unit change can signal illness or a major abnormality.  Urine pH on the other hand tends to change often and by large amounts on a daily basis in response to one’s diet.  An acidic meal or a salty soup can send your pH down 2-3 pH units. While blood pH varies very little and urine pH varies greatly, they both change together in the same direction over time.  This is why measuring urine pH is a helpful tool providing quick feedback about the health of your daily diet.

General North American Diet & The Body’s Buffering Process

The average American consumes an acidifying diet and on average has a urine pH of 5.5, while it is preferable to be at 7.0-7.5, a slightly alkaline environment.  General culprits are large portions of animal protein, fast food, processed food, not enough fresh fruit and vegetables, too much sodium (often when eating out). In addition, even our fresh food does not have the mineral/nutrient content it had years ago due to soil depletion and the agricultural process.  When your urine pH is below 7.0 (acidic) over long periods of time, your blood buffers itself by removing minerals from your bones and organs.  As you age, this may lead to diseases, such as osteoporosis.  Supplementing with HealthPhix gives you the minerals and nutrients your body needs and makes it easier to balance your daily food-intake.

pH & Aging

Alkalinity is also harder to maintain as we age. As we get older, our kidney function is reduced, which leads to increased retention of acids and results in a state of low-grade metabolic acidosis. It takes several organ systems, such as bone and muscle to compensate for this increased acid retention, which can lead to significant health issues if left un-checked.

Athletic Activity

Whether you are an athlete performing high intensity training and competition or someone who exercises regularly, replenishing the essential minerals/electrolytes you sweat out during exertion is critical to recovery and preventing metabolic acidosis, which can have significant effects such as decreased endurance, poor bone health, muscle cramping, arrhythmia and heart impairment, and decreased alertness.

Professional and recreational athletes need essential nutrients including minerals, polyphenols, fatty acids, carotenoids, omega 3’s, and GLA for the proper development, maintenance and repair of their cells, tissues and body. A lack of these nutrients combined with dehydration (from perspiration) leads to a state of acidosis and thickening of blood. This reduces the blood’s oxygen delivery to tissues and impairs its ability to remove carbon dioxide, resulting in faster breathing rate and more unnecessary energy expenditure.

Hydrating early and often with high-absorption minerals (especially for endurance athletes) is key to reducing acidity and maintaining pH balance. This improves performance, reduces fatigue, cramping and joint/muscle pain and speeds recovery time.

Measuring Your pH

When should I measure my pH?

You should check urine pH 3-4 hours after a meal. At first, try to measure your pH every day and even several times per day to understand how your meals affect your pH. Urine pH varies due to diet, hydration and metabolic factors and can change throughout the day. You can quickly learn what foods are acid-generating and which foods are alkalizing and  combined with the proper minerals and vitamins, you can easily learn how to regulate your pH.

How to measure pH?

Use the pH Test Strips that come with our Anti-Aging Mineral Blend. Take a test strip and pass the colored end through your urine stream. Match the three colors to the chart on the box.  The number next to the closest 3-color match is your pH. 

What do the numbers on the pH scale mean?

4.5 – 5.5 Acid-generating diet
6.0 – 6.5 Moderately acid-generating diet
7.0 - Neutral
7.0 – 7.5 Preferred, Slightly alkalinizing diet
8.0+ - Alkaline

Note that pH is measured on a log scale, which means that each one-point change in pH is actually a ten-fold change in acidity or alkalinity. For example the difference in acidity between a pH of 5.0 and 7.0 is not 2 but actually 100 times (10 x 10).

How to eat a more alkalizing diet?

Most foods or food categories have a PRAL (Potential Renal Acid Load) value, which is the potential for a food to either acidify or alkalize the body.  Acidic foods have a positive (+) value and alkalizing foods have a negative value (-). The goal is to have balanced or slightly alkaline meals.  The beauty of following an alkaline diet is that it allows for enjoying all foods, no eliminations, just balancing portions and ingredients/food.  More on this to come.
